A birth doula assists the mother and her partner in preparing for and carrying out the plans for the birth of their child. She provides continuous emotional and physical support prenatally as well as during and immediately after labor, as well as information about the birth process and the available options. She facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner, and care providers. A birth doula does not take the place of the mother’s partner.
