Hyperinsulinemia is an endocrine disorder characterized by elevated levels of insulin in the blood. It is also referred to as insulin resistance, pre-diabetes or Syndrome X. Insulin (a hormone secreted by beta cells in the pancreas) regulates the process in which glucose is taken up from the blood and directed into cells that need extra energy.
Often seen with PCOS, hyperinsulinemia occurs when there is an imbalance in glucose metabolism or when, simply put, the body is not able to control blood sugar levels. With increased production of insulin by the pancreas, the body becomes resistant to the hormone and an androgen shift occurs. Androgen shift refers to a process whereby the HPO (hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian) axis is disrupted, resulting in an increased production of testosterone by the ovaries and cortisol by the adrenal glands.
With a healthy diet focused on foods which cause a slower and lower rise in blood sugar (i.e. beans, peas, lentils, whole grains and most vegetables; see the Acubalance Fertility Diet on our website) and a healthy exercise regimen, glucose metabolism can be regulated and the entire endocrine system kept in balance.
You will be on your way to improved reproductive health and a more balanced and energized you!
